Overcoming language barriers to academic publishing workshop
Publishing in English can be hard for non-native English speakers. Being less fluent in English could pose multiple disadvantages when pursuing a career in science and research. Science written by non-native English speakers tends to be rated lower, requested to revise, or even rejected from English-language journals, simply due to their way of writing.

Editors-in-Chief from three important and diverse journals (listed below) will discuss how their journals try to address language barriers to academic publishing and how non-native English speakers can improve publication processes.

Prof. Tracey Chapman (Editor-in-Chief, Evolution)
Prof. Jennifer Powers (Editor-in-Chief, Biotropica)
Dr. Paulo Pulgarín-R (Editor-in-Chief, Ornitología Neotropical)

After the seminar, we will have an open discussion session where participants will explore how we can measure the level of journals’ commitment to addressing language barriers and what might explain differences among journals. From this discussion, we will develop a collaborative project to collect relevant information from as many journals in organismal biology as possible and write a paper discussing journals’ commitment to addressing language barriers.
