2024 CUFA Graduate Mentoring Program Sign Up Form

Dear Faculty and Students of CUFA,

I am pleased to invite you to participate in the 2024 CUFA Graduate Forum Mentoring Program, which aims to support doctoral students by matching them with a faculty member with similar interests and shared identities. For graduate students, this is an excellent opportunity to explore their ideas with those outside their institution, gain insider information about the field, and broaden their network of mentors. For faculty, mentorship creates a meaningful chance to support the next generation of social studies scholars through sharing your knowledge and connections. While the program centers around the CUFA conference, we invite those unable to attend this year’s conference to still consider taking part in the program. We are seeking to connect graduate students and faculty through two programs:

1. Professional Mentoring:

  • This mentorship is for graduate students seeking professional and career-focused mentorship from a faculty member with similar interests and identities.
  • Mentors and Mentees communicate 1-2 times throughout the year (i.e., Zoom, calls, emails) and meet in person at the CUFA conference. Of course, you can always meet more frequently if it works for both parties!
  • Mentors explore the Mentee’s ideas, questions, and concerns, offer advice for navigating the field, and make connections to others who may be able to provide additional support. They may also discuss how their shared identities have impacted them and tips for dissertation, job market, teaching strategies, etc.
  • If the Mentee is presenting at CUFA, we encourage Mentors to attend the session and provide support and feedback; this is not required, but suggested if it is possible!

2. Writing Mentoring:

  • This mentorship is for graduate students seeking writing support from those in the field with similar interests and identities.
  • Mentors and Mentees communicate twice during the year (once for professional advice, once for writing/project feedback) and once in person at CUFA. Of course, you can always meet more frequently if it works for both parties!
  • Writing Mentors provide the same guidance as a Professional Mentor and provide constructive feedback for at least one paper or project by the Mentee.
  • If the Mentee is presenting at CUFA, we hope that Mentee will share or practice their presentation and receive feedback prior to or after from the Mentor.  We also encourage Mentors to attend the session and provide support and feedback; this is not required, but suggested if it is possible!

Mentorships are typically one-year commitments starting from the match and ending April 2025, though we hope this mentorship develops lasting connections and that mentoring pairs continue their professional relationship beyond this time. To continue to grow their networks, graduate students are encouraged to match with a new mentor the following year.

If you would like to participate as a mentor or mentee, please complete this quick form by Sunday, March 24, 2024. Those signed up by March 24th will be matched in April. Thereafter, signing up for the program is still welcome on a rolling basis.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone who may be interested in participating! We are hoping for robust participation in the program this year, and are seeking a diverse pool of mentors and mentees from which to make connections.

Thank you for your interest and consideration,

Nate Smith & the CUFA Graduate Forum Executive Board
