Rep. Steve Xiarhos is a presenting co-sponsor of MA House Docket 4561, which would require that our state’s emergency shelter program only be used to fund services for residents of the Commonwealth who are citizens of the United States. This clarification is consistent with the original intent of the law, which is to provide benefits to residents of our state who fall upon hard times and need emergency assistance. This law never was intended to supply an endless stream of taxpayer-funded benefits to persons who have entered our country under questionable (if not outright illegal) circumstances and who seek public funding to remain here.
