UC Berkeley African Language Survey
The Center for African Studies and the Program in African Languages seeks to learn more about the African languages that students, staff, faculty and community members speak and/or would like to study. By completing this survey, you will help us understand more about our local African linguistic landscape. Opportunities may also emerge to work with faculty and students in the Department of Linguistics on the description of under-documented languages through research projects and field work classes.

UC Berkeley currently offers Amharic, Arabic, Igbo and Swahili. Through the California African Language Initiative, we collaborate with the African Studies Center at UC Los Angeles. UCLA offers Amharic, Swahili, Tigrinya and Yoruba. Most of these African language courses are available to other UC students through the UC Online system. (Search through the 'Language and Literature' listings to see what courses are available each term.)

While we currently do not currently have the capacity to support instruction in other African languages, it is useful for us to know in what languages students are interested. We also may be able to direct you to summer language programs that would meet your interests.
