Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health: Call for Stories on Climate Solutions

We say climate solutions are health solutions. Share your story to make the point!

The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health in the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University is seeking uniquely positive stories about addressing climate change. Our forthcoming Medical Promise Report on advancing climate solutions asserts that transforming our energy, transportation and agricultural systems and revamping our approach to community and building design offer us a path to protecting the health of all future generations from the worst of climate change. But we also have the unique opportunity to highlight how, when done right and fairly, climate solutions – far from being painful “treatments” that pit sacrificing current comforts against long-term threats – will result in immediate improvements in our health, well-being, and economies.

We invite you to share your local or regional story. Tell us how your community is taking climate action across one of the five areas that will be highlighted in our upcoming Medical Promise Report: clean renewable energy, clean and active transportation, healthy buildings and homes, healthy outdoors, and healthy food and food systems. We are looking to promote stories online that are living and breathing examples of these actions in the real world and their positive impact on communities.

Use the template below as a guideline for sharing your story. Stories should be approximately 300-500 words (or one-half to one page single spaced).

What “promise” of climate solutions does your story fit within? (If you have multiple stories that fit within different “promises,” please submit a separate form for each story.)

Clean Renewable Energy: stop investing in energy produced by fossil fuels; invest in and support clean, non-combustion renewable energy; make the transition fair to everyone

Clean and Active Transportation: invest in increased active and public transportation and other non-polluting ways to get places; make things easier for non-drivers; electrify everything; address inequities

Healthy Buildings and Homes (Indoors): reduce the energy cost burden for low-income households; support community resilience hubs; invest in “cool” buildings; address the big picture on housing

Healthy Community Environments (Outdoors): improve access to community green space; assure access to clean and affordable drinking water for all; focus on addressing inequities

Healthy Food and Food Systems: reduce the health harms from exposure to toxic emissions and pollution; reduce the health harms to agricultural workers; increase access to affordable, healthy foods (eliminate “food deserts”; eliminate food insecurity; support adaptation efforts)
