Curbside Compost Survey
East Longmeadow is seeking to see if our residents would be interested in a curbside compost program. Residents would collect their food scraps, and set them out in a bin for collection each week. Food waste comprises of 40% of trash tonnage, so this would decrease the amount of trash sent to the landfill, and reduce our carbon footprint.

How the Compost Pilot 2.0 Would Work
The Town of East Longmeadow would provide residents with information on private haulers offering weekly curbside compost collection services. Residents would contract directly with their hauler of choice and pay that hauler to collect food waste for their household.

Based on initial research, haulers are currently offering compost collection for $10 biweekly or $15/week, with many incentives. All of these haulers currently accept fruits and vegetables, grains and processed food, dairy, meat, seafood, bones, shells and other items that aren't suitable for backyard composting. Several offer additional services such as curbside yard waste pick up.

The Town may help offset a portion of residents' costs for this service by providing incentives, such as free compostable bags, free finished compost, free curbside bins, and other benefits TBD. These incentives would be funded based on an estimated reduction in the Town's trash tipping fees - therefore creating no additional cost to the Town.
