The multi-sensory urban forest: Many ways of knowing, sensing, and caring

Please register below so we have a count of how many people to expect, but walk-ins are always welcome!

This an interactive session that features diverse perspectives from artists who are creating innovative approaches to a deeper understanding of ourselves in relation to urban ecosystems.

We will share examples of artists’ work that engages sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell of urban forests to capture public imagination about these places and systems – including photographs of street trees (Matthew López-Jensen) and audio of underground sounds (Nikki Lindt). Community-engaged or social practice art offers another key route for public participation, care, and stewardship – such as indigo dye workshops (Krystal Mack) and foraging on a floating food forest (Mary Mattingly).

Presenters will be drawn from the Urban Field Station Collaborative Arts Program (UFS Arts, www.ufsarts.com), which embeds artists in residence with scientists and land management practitioners at locations across the country and world and is co-led by the USDA Forest Service and The Nature of Cities.
