Experiments in Supine Possibilities or How "we might use our position at the bottom to make a clear leap into revolutionary action"
Intake Form for the Church of Black Feminist Thought Embodied Citation Lab ~ part of a series of trans-local vignettes that make up Gallery of The Streets "We Begin With Play"

Experiments in Supine Possibilities is an invitation to participate in 7 days of intentional 'rest-full-ness.' Assuming a supine posture (laying down on one's back) for a sustained period of time in an attempt to let abolitionist strategy emerge from the vantage point of 'the bottom'. Participants are asked to record observations before and after each "Supine Test."This embodied citation lab will take place from November 3rd - November 10th, 2020. This is an invitation to utilize a choreography of pause in the midst of widespread political absurdity. It is an experiment in that we don't know what will happen, but we are excited to be together in this act.

METHODS

One method of experimentation I am practicing and inviting you into includes a daily "Supine Tests" from 8:11-8:46 am/pm. That's 35 minutes of laying horizontally on your back.

This is just one possible method. Feel free to choose whichever locations feel interesting/important/accessible to you!

Feel free to choose times that feel interesting/important/accessible to you!

Helen will also be hosting a daily "Snoozoom" Call where you can rest in community at 1pm PST -->
Time: Nov 3 - 10 at 1 p.m. PST (45 minutes of rest)
Email mankattan@yahoo.com for Zoom info

Whatever choices you make I just ask that you take note of those "variables" in your journaling and reflection.

HYPOTHESIS
We ask that you generate some leading questions that will anchor our experiments. If it's helpful you can use the "If/then" format.

example 1: "If I practice stillness and vulnerability in unfamiliar surroundings, then I will build up my tolerance for the unknown."
example 2: "How can ease be practiced as an abolitionist strategy?"

OBSERVATIONS
We ask that you journal/freewrite/record some intentions and observations before and after each "Supine Test." Take note of any choices you've made. This is our data! and what we will come together to reflect on next week. Where are you? What are you listening to? Did you do anything special before or after?

Heightened awareness of your surroundings is a good thing! What are you noticing? how does it feel in your body? what happens when you allow yourself to notice your surroundings without trying to make meaning out of what you hear/see/smell?

Restfulness/sleep is a good thing! how would you describe the quality of your rest? Are you dreaming? what about? How do you feel before and after your rest? What different things do you notice before and after rest?

DOCUMENTATION
We created a private "Padlet Board" that we can upload documentation on to -- videos, writing, pictures of journal pages, drawings, images of the view from the bottom, anything! you can also just hold your thoughts in your journals and we can talk about them next week!
