Mission / Goals
Dance Church is on a mission to bring the joy and release of dance to every body, while building sustainable systems of support for dance artists. Every class is taught by a dance artist, and Dance Church invites new audiences into dance spaces, enabling connection and financial support for teachers that complements their dance careers.

About the Class
Dance Church® is an all-levels movement class that offers a fun and inclusive approach to dancing. Designed for people of all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and identities, Dance Church is a communal space for people who want to move their bodies. Teachers guide 60-70ish minutes classes of guided movement cues and free form dance breaks, accompanied by a curated playlist of multi-genre pop music, and encourage intuitive choices from all takers.

What it means to be a teacher
We are looking for dance artists who are community-minded, entrepreneurial and excited about supporting the growth of Dance Church in their city. You will become part of the Dance Church teacher community, receive in-depth training and ongoing support for class structure and planning, music curation, community-building, and access to marketing mentorship and resources. Teachers are scheduled by the Dance Church programming team, and must be available for at least 2 shifts per month at all venues in your city for the first 6 months of hire. You can also teach pop-up classes while traveling and on tour.

In addition to teaching, all Dance Church teachers are regularly scheduled to Support classes. Support shifts include setting up the dance space, checking folks in, supporting the safety and energy of class, and adding your movement to the room!

How to apply

Start your application here! We will reach out to you within 1-3 weeks and those who qualify will be invited to a 60 minute screening call before the decision is finalized.

What is the time commitment?

If you’re invited to become a teacher, congratulations! You’ll meet your cohort and receive in-depth training covering best practices for teaching class, building community, and ongoing marketing. Training takes 16-20 hours and can mostly be completed asynchronously (on your own time) online. During Training you will also be asked to attend IRL classes in your city, and meet with your cohort and the Training Manager for 3 one-hour meetings.

The main work is to go through training, regularly attend classes in your city (research and development!) and maintain an active and thoughtful teaching practice. Once you begin teaching, classes are compensated at 5 hours of work per class, including playlist building, class planning, and in-studio teaching time.

Teachers are guaranteed at least 1 Teaching shift and 1 Support Role shift every month. The programming team will schedule each month based on availability. All Dance Church Teachers and team members meet monthly for one hour on zoom. This ongoing meeting provides a rhythm for collaborative development, company updates and ongoing training.

Compensation

Teachers are W2 employees and are paid as follows: Teacher Role (5 hours/scheduled class) & Support Role (2 hour/scheduled class) Hourly Rates below

  • $40 an hour - First 10 Classes taught
  • $45 an hour - Second 10 classes taught
  • $50 an hour - After 20 classes taught

Additionally, teachers are paid minimum wage (per their state and/or metropolitan jurisdiction) for their time completing required training and setup prior to their first class, and ongoing $20 per hour for any required work outside of classes, for example attending teacher meetings.

We will provide you with necessary equipment: AV adaptor, sweat towel, Aesop spray, and monthly Spotify account. Dance Church will not reimburse for travel.
