SPEAKER: Prof. Thomas Mullaney
LOCATION: SIN 1, Department for East Asian Studies/Chinese Studies, University of Vienna, Altes AKH, Campus, Spitalgasse 2, Yard 2, Entrance 2.3
What
are the best ways to design a research project that is personally meaningful to
you, and that matters to the world? In this two-part seminar series,
Christopher Rea and Thomas Mullaney, the authors of Where Research Begins, will share specific techniques that any
researcher—novice or experienced, in any field or discipline—can use to
identify a research problem that truly matters to them, and then to build a
research project with broader significance.
On
May 4, Professor Rea will introduce strategies for finding your research
problem, using exercises from Part 1 of Where
Research Begins.
On
May 15, Professor Mullaney will introduce strategies for identifying and
connecting with other scholars who share your research problem, using exercises
from Part 2 of Where Research Begins.
Both seminars are open to researchers at
all levels, and no preparation is required. Just bring yourself, some paper and
pens, your questions, and your project ideas. You are welcome to attend both
events, or just one.
Join these
interactive sessions if you (or your students) have ever:
· Had trouble
choosing a research topic, or developing it into a research project
· Experienced
difficulty explaining the purpose of your research
· Felt
like your research topic was imposed by someone else
· Wanted
to learn strategies for connecting with researchers outside your field or
discipline
· Been
curious about new ways to think about how to do research
