Increasing energy efficiency—using less electricity, natural gas, and water to complete the same everyday functions—can lead to monetary savings, greater comfort, and a healthier environment. To promote energy efficiency as part of the Will County Energy Efficiency Fall Event Series 2021 , check off the activities you would like to complete to improve your energy efficiency!

Appliance-Based

To Improve your energy efficiency, you plan to:

Replace incandescent bulbs with LED lighting *

Enable energy-saving power modes on your televisions and computers * ^

Find an energy efficiency rebate or discount for an appliance you would like to upgrade or replace through ENERGY STAR’s Rebate Finder, ComEd’s Rebates & Discounts webpage, and/or Nicor’s Rebates webpage

Replace a standard appliance or product you own with an ENERGY STAR model * ^

Reduce energy consumed through your water use by installing USEPA WaterSense®-approved low-flow showerheads and/or faucet aerators *

Complete regular maintenance on your heating and cooling appliances by: Cleaning or changing the air filter in your heating and cooling units at least every three months *

Complete regular maintenance on your heating and cooling appliances by: Considering contacting a certified contractor to do some tune-up work

Weatherize your home by caulking your windows, sliding draft guards under your doors, and/or sealing or insulating walls, pipes, ducts, and water heaters *

Install a smart or programmable thermostat and, when you are asleep or away from home for hours at a time, adjust the times your heating and AC kick in

Usage-Based

To improve your energy efficiency, you plan to:

Plug electronics into a powerstrip and cut power to appliances when not in use * ^

Turn off lights and fans when not in use * ^

Take advantage of sunlight during the day (particularly in the winter) by opening the blinds instead of turning on lights * ^

Clean clothes by washing full loads in cold water, using a drying rack instead of a dryer, and/or following other laundry best practices * ^

Use the dishwasher only when full and/or let dishes air dry *

Reduce energy consumed through your water use by: Checking for and fixing leaks in indoor and outdoor water fixtures * ^

Reduce energy consumed through your water use by: Taking shorter showers and/or turning off the water while you brush your teeth or wash your hands * ^

Use space heaters only temporarily for spot heating and not as a main heating source * ^

If you have access to your water heater, turn down the temperature (recommended 120°F, which is sufficiently warm)

Participate in a demand response offered by your local utility: Enroll in ComEd’s Peak Time Savings program (if you are not enrolled in ComEd’s Central AC Cycling program)

Participate in a demand response offered by your local utility: Enroll in ComEd’s Central AC Cycling program (if you are not enrolled in ComEd’s Peak Time Savings program and have central air conditioning in your home)

Participate in a demand response offered by your local utility: Enroll in ComEd’s Hourly Pricing program and run appliances during off-peak hours, when real-time electricity prices are lower

If you have a programmable thermostat, manually setting your thermostat a few degrees higher in the summer and lower in the winter when you are asleep or away from home for hours at a time (recommended 74-78°F in summer, 68°F in winter) * ^

Avoid setting your thermostat below 55°F to prevent your pipes from freezing!

Clean or replace HVAC filters every month to increase their efficiency. Filters that have a film of dust and dirt overwork your HVAC system and waste energy.

Utilize fans rather than raising the thermostat in the summer.

Register for and attend other energy efficiency events, such as the in-person energy audit workshop and utility bill clinics in this series * ^
