Facilitated by Olivia Devorah Tucker, SVARA Teaching Kollel Fellow

After a generous donation of the full Steinsaltz Edition of the Babylonian Talmud, Ratzon is diving into the conversations of the early Rabbis! Olivia Devorah Tucker, community member, and SVARA Teaching Kollel Fellow, will lead us on this 6-Week Journey through these bottomlessly fascinating texts.

Our Bet Midrash will be in two parts:

-- September 1 & 8 will be accessible to learners of any Hebrew level, and focus on texts in English translation, using the new Steinsaltz Talmud volumes. We will have full class learning about the history(ies) of Talmud & break off into groups to explore its content (focused on the concept of "dozing off").

-- September 15 - October 6 will be a SVARA-Style Bet Midrash, accessible to learners who know their alef-bet. Learning SVARA-style means working from the original Hebrew/Aramaic with a chevruta (a 1:1 study buddy), using some fabulous dictionaries*. Olivia recommends these two alef-bet crash courses: Kamionkowski and Cartoon Hebrew!
  • We will hold open library hours at Ratzon on Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm the entire month of September. During these open hours, we will have someone in the space who knows the alef-bet, and can help out with questions or be a study buddy.
  • We welcome you to sign up with a chevruta in mind, or fill out the chevruta matching questionnaire below to be matched with someone!

*Dictionaries! Through a grant from SVARA, Ratzon will be purchasing a few sets of Jastrow and Frank Dictionaries for Talmud study! If you would like your own copies for future study, and taking notes in, you can learn more on SVARA's website. You may want to pick up a magnifying glass as well for any small text.

Cost: This series is free! At the same time, Olivia teaches Talmud professionally, so if you want to make a donation to help pay one of our peers for their work, we welcome you to make an earmarked donation to Ratzon -- there is a field for you to leave a note on the last page, you can write that the donation is for the Talmud program.
