Topic 1.2.1-2024 (IA) Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.


Our initiative is focused on advancing sustainable agriculture within the Mediterranean region, addressing critical challenges such as water scarcity, contamination of natural water resources, soil degradation, insufficient biodiversity preservation, and food security. Our aim involves the application of nature-based solutions, utilizing a multidisciplinary methodology to enhance soil vitality. This is coupled with an innovative water harvesting system, employing state-of-the-art technology, and the reintroduction of crop varieties that are optimally adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions. In addition, we place significant emphasis on the analysis of data and the development of corresponding tools. These are designed to facilitate marketing strategies, enable efficient knowledge transfer, and support the establishment of large demonstration sites along with socio-economic evaluations. This NEXUS approach provides a well-rounded solution to the complexities associated with sustainable agriculture.

1. Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis on the following topics:

Investigation into the application of treated wastewater in agricultural practices and its subsequent impact on soil health
Assessment of the potential impact of treated wastewater on human health
Investigation into the application of biochar in agricultural practices and its subsequent impact
Examination of the application of vermicompost and compost, and their effects on soil health
Conducting a socio-economic and environmental assessment of the project

2. Technological Integration, Application, and Development:

Integration of fog catcher technologies into the proposed harvesting system
Engaging a software developer to create a tool that will support the project’s activities and outcomes

3. Product Development and Marketing:

4. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
