Are you a first-year student? *
You graduated high school, maybe took some time, and it's your first-year in college.
About First-Gen Scholars:
First-Gen Scholars is unique. You really have to experience our program in person to fully understand it, but we'll try our best to explain it. We are both a community and a class led by first-generation students and supervised by first-generation staff who come together for holistic advising, mentoring, and leadership while building community together.

First-Gen Scholars:

• are a diverse group of first-generation students who are looking for a way to stay connected and understand the ins and outs of university life;

• are either First-Years or Mentors and Independents (other undergraduate in their 2nd-5th+ year or transfer students). Mentors and Independents support first-year students through their experiences as first-generation students;

• are tied to the UGS Office for First-Gen Access, which provides additional scholarship, leadership, and internship opportunities;

• participate in a one-credit, elective course on either Thursday from 02:00pm to 04:00pm or Friday from 10:50am to 12:50pm (times may change for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022);

• do not pay for the one-credit tuition;

• learn through the class's four main themes surrounding Adulting (real-word skills), Campus Resources, Professional Development (through a first-generation student lens), and Networking (because you need to meet the other First-Gen Scholars!);

• access internship opportunities within the UGS Office for Diversity & Inclusion from programs such as: the Dream Center, First Star Academy for Foster Youth, and additionally through partnerships with U PATHS, Truth Cypher, and Mestizo Arts and Activism;

• provide feedback to make sure the class is addressing the current needs of the students; and

• become part of a network of more than 500 first-generation scholars--a majority of whom are women and students of color!

First-Gen Scholars is about you and what you need to be successful on and off campus. We have fun, learn together, and work towards a better future for the communities we come from--come and join!
First-Year Student Responsibilities:
First-Gen Scholar First-Years commit to:

• attend all weekly meetings for two hours;
• respond to personal contact from other First-Gen Scholars, especially Mentors;
• reach out to other First-Gen Scholars, especially Mentors, for support; and

Final thoughts or concerns about the application process and/or the First-Generation Scholars program?
We mean anything, even if it is how miserably awful this application was. Though we do have one rule: you can only complain if you offer a solution ;D
