Hollow Middle Class
I'm working on a series of articles describing the reality of the "hollow" middle class: people whose income level technically places them in the "middle" of the earnings levels, but whose expenses (rent, childcare, medical, elder care) and debts (student, credit card, auto, mortgage) make it difficult to save or do more than barely make ends meet on a month-to-month basis.

If you'd like to share your story, you can use your real first name, or you can use a pseudonym — finances are embarrassing to talk about, and these pieces will attempt to grapple with that reality, too. None of this information will be shared or made public outside of the piece. **If you'd like to share your story but don't feel comfortable putting information into a form on the internet, please email me and we can talk about setting up an interview.**

Non-American responses are welcome. If you'd like to use a different name, I still ask for your real name so I can confirm that you're a real person — and your email for follow-up questions. If you have questions about the pieces, please don't hesitate to email me: annehelenpetersen@gmail.com

What's your real name? *
If you'd like to use a pseudonym, please provide one here.
Where do you live? (You can list the city or be more vague if you'd like; "Rural Wisconsin," "East Texas," etc)
How old are you?
What is your race or ethnicity?
What's your living situation? (Single, married, partnered, number of kids in or out of the home, parents in the home, etc etc)
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your identity that feels important to this discussion?
What is your current household income, and how is it split? (If it's changed with COVID, please elaborate)
What makes someone "middle class"?
What are your biggest expenditures every month? (To keep in mind: rent, medical costs, child care, student debt, elder care, credit card balance payments, groceries, services, travel, entertainment) (Yes, think of these costs pre- and post-COVID; if you feel comfortable, please list approximate amounts)
Do you feel like you're able to save what you "should" be? (Define "should" however you'd like here)
Do you feel like your financial situation is similar to that of your peer group? (Coworkers, friends, family of similar age, neighbors, however you want to define this)
How does your financial situation differ from that of your parents or in-laws when they were your age?
How does your current financial situation make you *feel*? Be as descriptive as possible here.
There's a long (American) tradition of refusing to talk about class gradations, save when it comes to the very poor and the very rich. Do you talk with people other than your partner about your financial situation? Why or why not?
Does identifying as middle class feel important to you? What would it feel like if you could no longer claim that identity?
What is the future of the middle class in your country?
If you have any additional middle class thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
