Souvent pensĂ©e pour elle-mĂŞme, la modernitĂ© est rarement observĂ©e Ă l’échelle du temps long de l’histoire de la crĂ©ation humaine. Et si « la modernitĂ© » ne devait nous servir qu’à rendre hommage Ă Baudelaire, autrement dit Ă celui qui voulait dĂ©sespĂ©rĂ©ment conjuguer le nouveau et l’ancien dans un mĂŞme mouvement de l’histoire, dans un mĂŞme monde habitĂ© depuis toujours par les formes ? Alors, « le moment moderne », aussi puissant soit-il, s’évanouirait vite dans l’univers encombrĂ© d’« Ă©vĂ©nements » ou de « tournants ».Â

Modernity is often thought of for its own sake, but is rarely observed on the scale of the long history of human creation. And what if the purpose of "modernity" were only to pay tribute to Baudelaire, in other words to the man who desperately wanted to combine the new and the old in the same historical movement, in the same world inhabited by forms from the beginning? Then the "modern moment", however powerful it may be, would quickly fade away in the cluttered universe of "events" or "turning points".
