About the Docent Program
Docents are trained volunteers who are essential to educating our youngest visitors about the diverse exhibitions on display at FWMoA, using the art as a tool to expand the minds of all who listen and learn. Docenting is a unique opportunity to work with children, heighten your mental engagement, and contribute to your community. Docents are trained to communicate with students and teachers and are given tour scripts to help them present the material and navigate through each exhibit. The training also focuses on important vocabulary, giving dynamic tours, and connecting with your audience.

Qualifications: Must be 18 or older (younger teens should consider applying for the Teen Council). Prospective children’s docents must have an interest in art and working with children and be comfortable speaking in front of a group. No prior experience with art or children is required, but may be helpful. Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a friendly, positive attitude are key. Information is frequently shared via email, so a valid email address and the ability to use it is necessary. All new docents must pass a criminal background check before working with children.

Time Commitment: PreK-12 tours occur mainly during the months of September - May with a few during the summer. Each PreK-12 tour is an hour in length and generally happens on Tuesday - Friday 9:30 - 2:00. Docents may occasionally be asked to help with special events on evenings and weekends. Docents are expected to attend twice-monthly Monday morning meetings during the school year as training sessions.
