On behalf of BOMSA, BOTA & BOA, we invite all
aspiring surgeons to submit an expression of interest to be a local BOMSA representative
at your university.
About BOMSA:
Trauma & Orthopaedic (T&O) surgery is the largest surgical
specialty with over 700 applications for 125 specialty training posts in 2020, contributing
to a vibrant community of over 2,500 practising T&O surgeons. The British
Orthopaedic Medical Students Association (BOMSA) is the first organisation
of its kind in the UK that is solely dedicated to helping medical students
fulfil their career aspirations and take their first steps in their journey to become future T&O surgeons.
BOMSA is a national junior-led organisation, directly
affiliated with both the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British
Orthopaedic Trainee Association (BOTA), which aims to represent student
interests in T&O. Our vision, in line with that of the BOA and BOTA, is to
build a vibrant, sustainable, and representative community of students
preparing for a career in T&O surgery. We aim to support students from
entry into medical school until graduation, nurturing the grass root members of
the wider orthopaedic community, who will go on to become the leaders,
innovators, and orthopaedic surgeons of the future.
BOMSA Local Representatives:
BOMSA are looking to recruit up to 2 local
representatives from each medical school in the UK to represent BOMSA at their
institution. Local BOMSA representatives will be the direct line of
communication between your medical school, local surgical/T&O society and BOMSA
UK. All local representatives will form regional BOMSA committees with
neighbouring institutions, which will create efficient communication channels
for all things BOMSA, as well as increase student awareness of BOMSA initiatives
and membership.
We believe that collaboration can greatly enhance exposure
to orthopaedics. We want to encourage and support all of you in providing
events to your regions, whether that be workshops, talks, education,
conferences or research and mentoring opportunities. BOMSA acts as a powerful
national network, uniting student bodies to allow for the coordinated
representation of student interests in T&O surgery.
The aim of local BOMSA representatives is to
also increase the number of local student-led events supported by BOMSA in your region, and
inspire students in their early career to pursue a career in T&O. So if you’re an aspiring surgeon who wants to join a network of like-minded
medical students and surgical trainees, participate in research and
educational initiatives, run your own events with support from BOMSA, BOTA & BOA, whilst getting points on
your surgical portfolio, then this is the role for you!
Who we are looking for?
- Medical students who are keen, opportunistic and enthusiastic about surgery and organising T&O specific events.
- Medical students who are currently engaged or have previously held committee positions on their local university surgical or T&O society (although this is not a requirement).
- Those who wish to enhance student exposure and engagement in
orthopaedic-related activities at their local university.
What do we require of you?
- To join your regional network for a handful of meetings throughout the year
- Collaborate with universities for advertisement +/- joint initiatives
- To organise a small number of events throughout the year (e.g. contribute to a regional workshop / run an education seminar etc.)
- To help us disseminate surveys and opportunities from BOMSA, BOTA and BOA
N.B. BOMSA do not stop you running your own events or conferences. BOMSA UK encourages collaboration, advertisement opportunities and higher impact events. We do not seek to increase work load or stifle independence.
What is in it for you?- The opportunity to scale your own ideas and initiatives at your university and over your region with the support of BOMSA.
- Be an important part of a national initiative to greatly enhance
exposure to orthopaedic surgery at an undergraduate level.
- The opportunity to nominate yourself within your region as BOMSA Regional Lead (e.g. BOMSA North West Lead) - a formally recognised role by BOMSA, BOTA and BOA for your surgical portfolio and CV building.
- The opportunity to progress to the BOMSA National Committee in subsequent years.
- Access to pastoral, logistical and financial support for your orthopaedic events in your region.
- The opportunity to network with like-minded individuals, surgical trainees and consultants across the UK.
- Invitations to meetings, events and conferences arranged by BOMSA UK, BOTA and BOA.
- Exclusive invitation to the BOMSA UK National Committees Day 2023.
