Exploring First in Family to College
Medical Students' Experiences with Noncurricular Activity Participation through
an Anti-Deficit Lens: A Qualitative Study
We are seeking to interview fourth
year UW medical students who are the first in their family to graduate college
(FiF) about their noncurricular activities (encompassing anything outside of
the curriculum, including research, volunteering, employment, caring for
family, and more). Our goal is to better understand the activities FiF students
participate in, how they make decisions regarding the use of their time, and
how they see different activities as contributing to their professional
development.
As a participant, you would offer a ≤1-hour
interview in person or over a video call. Participants will receive a $50
gift card to compensate for their time.
If you are interested in
participating in this study, please fill out this form. We will reach out soon to schedule a time for your interview!
This study was reviewed by the UW Institutional Review Board
and deemed “Not Human Research” status. It has received funding from an
institutional grant offered by the UW Center for Learning and Innovation in
Medical Education. Please reach out to Alexander Garrett (alexgarr@uw.edu) with any questions.
