General Guidelines

Purpose:

The Sharpsburg Council Knights of Columbus has voted to fund an annual scholarship program for students attending a Catholic school during the 2021-2022 school year. The award of any individual scholarship is for the single school year covered by the application. Funds are to be used for tuition, books, uniforms, fees or other school related expenses. No future or ongoing awards to any applicant are implied or guaranteed.

Eligibility:

Any family member from the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church or any active (dues paid in full for the current year) members of the Sharpsburg Council Knights of Columbus may have their child submit an application for this scholarship to the Sharpsburg Council Knights of Columbus.

Each applicant must be an active participant in parish life. The council reserves the right to verify active parish status.  Recipients will be chosen based on number of applicants, financial need, and the judgment of the Scholarship Committee. Everyone is encouraged to apply regardless of need or previous award. Students in grades 9-12 and college will need to provide an essay on how Catholic school has deepened your faith and aided your growth as a Catholic. Please include how this scholarship will benefit you. Students should complete the essay independently. Each applicant that receives a scholarship award agrees to use the monies received only for school tuition, books, uniforms, fees and other school-related expenses. The Knights of Columbus would also prefer the award winner agree to have his or her picture taken for use at the Council's discretion solely for publicizing the scholarship. Please note that these awards are intended for full time students enrolled at a Catholic school for the school year covered in this application. Total expenses for a student cannot be less than the amount of the award.

Application Process:

The application process commences on June 5, 2021. This scholarship is only for those attending a Catholic school or college. Applications are available online.  To maintain social distancing practices the application process will be online this year.  If a paper application is required due to technical difficulties or inability to use the online form they are available by request at the address listed below. All Applications are due by July 5th. Applications will be processed and selected recipients will be notified by registered mail. Awards will be presented the weekend of July 17th. Applications may also be submitted in person to the scholarship chairman or to the Knights of Columbus mailbox in the Ministry Closet at Saint Mary Magdalene. We realize that for grades Pre-K - 6 some of the questions may not necessarily apply to the applicant. This will be taken into consideration during the application process and those questions that do not apply may be filled in with a N/A. Students and parents or guardians may fill out the application together.

Selection Process:

Applications will begin on June 5, 2021. Applications are due by July 5, 2021 and no late applications will be accepted. Awards will be presented at St Mary Magdalene after Masses the weekend of July 17th, If multiple applications are received in each category a joint decision will be made by a Selection Committee made up of the Scholarship Committee and Knights of Columbus Officers. The selection process will be based on number of applicants, financial need, information provided by the application and judgment of the selection committee. If no applicants are received in a particular category that category's award may be used to make multiple awards in a different category. The Knights of Columbus will attempt to award a scholarship in each category whenever possible.  All decisions are made at the discretion of the the Scholarship Committee and Sharpsburg Knights Council. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to verify school attendance information. All decisions are final. No information from any application will be disclosed beyond the Scholarship Committee without the expressed written permission of the applicant and their legal guardian. Applications will be destroyed after the selection process and no information beyond basic demographic information (name,  date of award, amount of award etc.) will be kept.

Notification:

Each applicant awarded a scholarship will be notified via phone or email and officially via registered U.S. mail with return receipt requested. The applicant has 10 days in which to respond to the Scholarship Committee as described in the award letter. If an applicant does not respond within 10 days, the first runner up will be notified they are the recipient of the scholarship.  If that recipient does not respond within 10 days, the award will be given to the next applicant in that category. If no applicant in a category responds, the scholarship money for that slot may be placed back into the scholarship fund or used for another recipient in another category at the Committee's discretion.

Award Presentation:

Scholarship awards will be presented at Awards will be presented at St Mary Magdalene after Masses the weekend of July 17th. For the child to receive this award, one parent or guardian should accompany the child.
The council would like to announce that recipient's name and award to the community but will not do so without recipient and guardian's permission.
