Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Survey
Westmont is pursuing the offering of an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing (ABSN) program. Your feedback on this survey will be very helpful. The survey is intended to provide a snapshot of current interest in the proposed ABSN program, pending licensing approval from the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
For those who may not be familiar with the proposed ABSN program, it is the result of a significant community need for bachelor's degree educated registered nurses with a liberal arts background, and it came to Westmont via a request by Cottage Health for us to offer such a program. In particular, from 2012 to 2020 there was a 166% increased demand for registered nurses in California, with 85% of nurse executives saying the need/demand for registered nurses far outstripped the supply of open nursing positions. This is not only true for the State of California but is equally true for Santa Barbara County and the entire Central Coast of California.
The ABSN program is envisioned as a post-baccalaureate (second bachelor's degree) curriculum for students who have already received a previous bachelor’s degree. The length of study would be four semesters, plus a summer semester, for a 16-month intense, didactic and clinical rotation program. There would be two cohorts of 24 students each (48 students annually) with one cohort beginning fall semester and one cohort beginning spring semester of each academic year. The ABSN program would be offered at our Westmont Downtown facility. We estimate ten to fifteen students annually would be Westmont graduates.
Thank you for your willingness to assist with this survey request. We stand ready to respond to any questions you might have about this very exciting proposed ABSN program.
With many thanks,
Rick Ifland
