A code of conduct to help guide Olathe North Theatre Participants as they navigate social media

Navigating social media

We have created this code of conduct to help us all as we use social media and navigate the digital world.

We recognize that social media is a great place to network, exchange ideas, share successes, get advice, and interact with people.

We also realize that the Olathe North Theatre Department and individual production social media accounts (the closed and open Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Gmail, GroupMe chats, etc.) are a great way for us to exchange information with students about upcoming events, fundraisers, rehearsal changes, announcements, upcoming deadlines, and more.

We also understand that social media can have a negative aspect that we want to try to avoid.

This social media code of conduct must be agreed to by all theatre participants once a year. By agreeing and completing this form you will be held to the standard of these guidelines. If these guidelines are not meet, your continued involvement in the individual show, or possibly as a part of the theatre program will be in question.

I understand that the Olathe North Theatre Department and thus the departments social media presence involves and represents participants with a wide range of beliefs and ideas about the subjects they’re discussing.

I understand that open dialogue is encouraged, while remaining courteous and respectful at all times.

I will follow the idea that if I wouldn't say it to my mother, boss, or a child I won't put into the world.

I understand that it is encouraged to visit often, to keep official GroupMe Chats unmuted, to participate and encourage others to do the same.

I understand that the department accounts and groups are used as an educational tool, that is being used to connect everyone involved in the department.

I understand that I should not post pictures or comments that include or contain, inappropriate comments, inappropriate pictures, comments meant to bully or demean or defame another person, or contain copywritten or illegal content

I understand that posts made on my social media accounts should also help to create a positive environment among the theatre community.

Quiet Backstage *

I understand that participants themselves do the best job of monitoring in the digital world.

I will notify one an ON theatre director if I see anything inappropriate or offensive posted by a member of the department.

I understand that reports made will be kept anonymous, as will any actions taken.

I recognize that all the worlds a stage to and make sure that people keep the group chat active i will refrain from posting unrelated, distracting and or excessive posts.

Proper Spacing *

I understand that a time away from screens and social media can be beneficial to my overall well being.

I understand that the concept of rest will also help my overall well being.

I will refrain from post during quiet hours from 9:00pm CST to 6:30am CST

I understand that this time of rest from devices also applies to rehearsal and no phones should be out during rehearsal. Please see a director if this will be an issue.

Callboard *

I understand a callboard is a theatre concept where information is posted that applies to the entire company and that social media has become a modern day callboard.

I understand that the ON Theatre accounts and chats will supplement the physical callboard.

I understand that because of this callboard like use of these accounts it is strongly recommended/required to check at least the current production GroupMe at least once a day.

I understand that it is each production member’s responsibility to do everything they can to cultivate a positive and professional environment, including, but not limited to, what happens online.

Better as an Ensemble *

I understand that all social media accounts that carry the Olathe North Theatre name, logo, or production branding are managed by the directorial team, the Thespian President, and Webstorian.

I understand that official group chats are director created and include the directorial team.

I understand that other social media is often used to help the process of the show a long as this activity doesn't interfere with the process of the show.

The Director is always right *

I understand that The directorial team understands the importance of social media as a tool and encourages its use as a way to communicate, have fun, and encourage.

I understand that Mr. Pence and the directorial team reserves the right to check and individuals social media accounts, including group messages, if there is reasonable belief that destructive or negative conversations are occurring that are impacting the rehearsal/show environment, the company, or the ensemble.

I will do my best to refrain from turning both department and individual social media into a divisive tool

I will follow copyright and will not post something if it is not mine, if I didn't get permission to post it and/or will cite sources when necessary

I understand that the Olathe North Theatre Directorial team and or Administration reserve the right to update or change these guidelines with out notice.

Regarding consequences *

Please check all of the below items

Members of the Olathe North Theatre Department understand that all social media is public and anything posted reflects on themselves, the production, the Olathe North Theatre Department, and Olathe North High School.

Any inappropriate or illegal content should not be posted on any department or personal account. This includes but is not limited to: offensive pictures, excessive swear words, alcohol or drug use, negative or inappropriate comments about peers, directors, the department, the school, our community, etc.

Inappropriate use of social media could result in removal from the production and potentially the department.

By signing, students and parents understand that a search of a theatre participants accounts can happen if there is reasonable belief that there is something in those accounts that is destructive to the department, production, or the individual student. No warning will be given before search – signing of the social media contract once a year serves as the warning.
