Grade 9 Band - Randall Standridge VBlog Series "Darklands Consortium"  on Youtube - Due Monday, May 4th
Mr. Standridge created a series documenting the process of how he wrote his Darklands Symphony. This assignment will be for marks for our Grade 9 Band Class while at home. It is due Monday, May 4th. The series is on YouTube and has 6 parts, but #5 is optional and #6 will be to only listen to DarkHeart.

Have your music out while watching the video series so you can pinpoint specific measure numbers in your answers. This is out of 30 marks. Due Monday, May 4th!

In this video, Mr. Standridge shows us his first "raw" version of The Mad Prince (Legends Mvt. 1). He has used the program "Finale" to write it. Do you hear any parts that he ended up changing for his final version of this movement? Describe which parts are/aren't different, and give specific measure numbers & parts where possible. Do you like this version better, or his completed version that we are playing? Why or why not?  /3

He also shows us his "first draft", which has more parts added and has more of a complete sound than the "rough sketch". What are the biggest differences you notice between the "rough sketch" and the "first draft"? Include measure numbers/instruments where possible.   /3

From around the 6:00 minute mark onward, Mr. Standridge shows us his rough sketch of The Queens Masque (Legends Mvt. 3). He also continues to compose it on screen, showing us his process for writing a piece. Describe this process. What do you think influences his decisions? How do you think he gets his ideas for what to add in for each instrument? (you may also notice he worked a lot on the first 8 measures, but they ended up being different than the final version we are playing)   /3

VBlog #5 -This VBlog is optional - it shows Mr. Standridge's full draft of Darklands Legends. Take a listen if you want and see if you notice any differences!
Go to 11:45 and listen to DarkHeart, or the 5th part of the Darklands Symphony. Do you notice any similarities between this movement and the other movements? (ie. Trumpets have repeated dissonant or "crunchy" 8th notes just like in The Mad Prince) Please be specific. What do you think this piece is about based on listening to it? Does it remind you of any other music you have heard before? (maybe in movies/games)   /3
