Carbohydrates and Fats mostly provide us with energy for our daily activities. Although Vitamins and Minerals are required in very minute quantities for our body, they play vital roles in the smooth functioning of the body. There are some vitamins which are soluble in water and others soluble in fats. We should also eat adequate amounts of Fibers also for smooth motion of the digested food in the intestine. A balanced diet consists of eating the right kind of food in the right amount. Without proper intake of food which is called Malnutrition, various deficiency diseases like Kwashiorkor, Anemia, Goitre, Osteoporosis, Night blindness, Beri-Beri, Scurvy, Rickets used to inflict our body that seriously affect our health. On the other hand, communicable diseases like Malaria, Cholera, Typhoid , Covid-19 etc are transmitted by various vectors like insects and mediums like air , water and soil. Vaccination must be done to prevent many communicable diseases including Covid-19 successfully. Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteurs were among the scientists who did early pioneering work to unravel the nature and behaviour of microorganisms and the methods to control their growth.
Spoilage of food is mostly due to the action of microorganisms present in the environment. Various methods like Dehydration, Salting, Canning and Bottling, Pasteurisation etc are generally adopted to kill the harmful microbes present in the food for preserving it for a long time. Providing a low temperature condition to the food as in the case of a refrigerator or dehydrating the water content of the food by drying it in the sun slows down the bacterial activity thereby preserving the food for a long time.
