Somerset Public Library

Our volunteer positions require a three month commitment. Volunteer applicants to be at least 15 years old and those under 18 years of age must have a signed letter from a parent or guardian approving their volunteer time.

All potential volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application form prior to being allowed to volunteer at the library. The library reserves the right to deny volunteer service to any person. Court-Ordered community service hours are currently not accepted.

Which of the following volunteer positions are you interested in applying for?

Descriptions (Select position from menu below)

Book Discussion Facilitator: Reads books.  Confers with attendees to select titles, communicates with the librarian to obtain copies and facilitates discussion.  Additional book clubs may be considered. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a month and additional time to read books.

Collection Maintenance. Keep shelves organized, dusted, and tidy. Assist in finding materials for interlibrary loans. Pack books for shipping. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, bending, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Time commitment: 30-60 minutes weekly.

Fundraiser: Identify grant and other fundraiser opportunities available to the Friends of the Library. Completes applications as well as develops fundraising campaigns. Must be a Friends of the Library member. Approximate time commitment: Varies.

Grounds Assistant (Summer only): Periodically walks the grounds and neatens the area. Waters and cares for indoor plants. Approximate time commitment: 30-60 minutes every two weeks.

Laundry Helper: Washes one load of the library's laundry every two weeks at your home. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes every two weeks.

Special Events: Assists with programming, decorating and cleaning at events for all ages. Approximate time commitment: Varies.

Technical Assistance: Assists with questions about using common computer programs such as Excel, downloading e-books, or designing websites. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a month.

Filled- Story Time Helper: Assists with Tuesday morning preschool story time. Prepares story time props, locates books related to weekly theme and assists parents with monitoring children. Reads stories on occasion. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a week.

Filled- Craft Group Facilitator: Organizes craft group by communicating with attendees, coordinating with librarian to obtain craft supplies. Securing building if meetings are after hours. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a week.

Filled- History and Genealogy Researcher: Locates articles and photos for queries. Collects and archives Somerset area history documents. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a week.

Filled- Home Delivery Driver: Delivers materials to homebound delivery recipients. Approximate time commitment: 60 minutes a month.
