A Statement Regarding the Plans for the New Barnet Gas Works
Local Residents & Labour Members are invited to sign, if in agreement

We oppose the current planning application for the New Barnet Gas Works.

We believe this application should be rejected and turned into an opportunity, a catalyst for the change we need in New Barnet. This is a time for boldness & vision. We need homes fit for the heroes of today (the keyworkers and for everyone else who lives and works in this community).

Our community needs & deserves:
a development of modern, sustainable, environmentally sound, safe, warm, insulated homes
homes with sufficient outside space – the Covid crisis has shown us how important these spaces are for physical and mental well-being
well planned and designed infrastructure to support the development and the residents
homes which are accessible and homes which are desirable for downsizers
truly affordable homes so that our friends, families, neighbours and keyworkers are no longer displaced from their community or forced into overcrowded or temporary accommodation

We are worth it! We deserve it! We have a vision for the community we want to live in - our community!

Join us in opposing the current planning application on these grounds:
Height, density, scale and massing
Inadequate habitable space
Pressure on local infrastructure (including utilities)
Failure to protect Barnet’s Character & Amenity
Concerns regarding fire safety
Housing mix
Road congestion and road safety
Failure to protect or enhance Barnet’s natural landscapes & local views

The development previously approved (and generally accepted as a compromise) was far from perfect (zero social homes and a nominal amount of so-called “affordable housing”). It was still at a height and density not in keeping with the surrounding area. The previously approved development is essentially “shovel ready”, but let’s do better. Because we can. Because we should.

The following petition, regarding planning in Barnet more generally, sits alongside this statement, please sign it too.
