Metacognition in the Early Years (IWG)
Metacognition refers to higher order thinking which involves active control over the cognitive processes engaged in learning.  Metacognition and self-regulation can add 7 months progress to children’s learning.
Metacognitive strategies are well aligned with the EYFS characteristics of effective learning, which suggests that metacognition could support children in early years to learn effectively, including in early years maths. The aim of this work group is to develop practitioners’ practice to more effectively support children’s metacognition in early years maths.
