ABOUT QUEER DIARY
Queer Diary is a night which invites LGBTQ+ people to read from their teenage diaries in front of a live audience (we also welcome teenage poetry, fanfic, artwork, letters, etc - "diaries" is just a suggestion, we really welcome anything from your youth!)
Reading your teenage secrets aloud might sound scary, but it can be hilarious, exhilarating, and empowering. It's a chance to feel seen and recognised, to connect with your younger-self, and bond with other queers.
We are inclusive of ALL LGBTQIA+ communities, and whatever you bring to share doesn't need to be "about" queerness - we know you've got range! We love bringing together a room full of people from a variety of times, places, and experiences. Some of our early lives will be eerily similar, some will be as vastly different as we all are from each other. In sharing, we want to celebrate all of our queer coming-of-age journeys: our moments of joy, discovery, resilience, passion, and even the banality of everyday life in a bygone era.
Queer Diary started in 2020, and our free online events take place with the support of the QAF Space queer community Zoom channel.
In summer 2021 we held our first in-person Queer Diary event at Omnibus Theatre in South London.
In future we're planning to continue running a mix of events online via Zoom, and in queer-friendly spaces in the physical realm (pubs, theatres, community venues) across the UK.
Queer Diary is created and hosted by Beth Watson, who's also currently working on a theatre show called Hasbian (which is based on, you guessed it - teenage diaries!).
Beth's aim with Queer Diary is to create a space for other LGBTQ+ people to share diaries, writings and memories from their youth, to bond over our experiences of growing up LGBTQ+, and to raise money for queer-run charities & organisations focussing on youth, education, and community.
