Following are several questions aimed at assessing skills, experience and motivation in order to figure out how to organise potential training.
A BSI Seiling skipper needs to be able to:Know sailing and boat handling basics well.
Dock/un-dock under both engine and sail.
Lead a crew that know absolutely nothing about sailing.
Consider which weather conditions you and the boat can handle with the crew that is at hand.
Respond adequately to any situation arising when and where you choose to sail.
Therefore it is important that you know the boat, yourself, the conditions that can arise in the area where you sail, what to do if problems arise and that you are able to communicate well with the crew and run the boat by use of the crew.
For any additional questions, contact the skipper manager (see website)
If you have already contacted us, please still answer this questionnaire so I have an update of your status and all the information in one place
The general idea is that:
1) If you are experienced on boats similar-ish to our expresses / are an instructor on similar-ish boats, and think you only need to get “checked-out” to become skipper, answer this form ASAP and I will put you in touch with some of our most experienced skippers to organize a check-out, and see from there!
2) If you have sailing experience (as crew member / dinghy sailor etc) but feel that you need training on specific aspects (like docking, teaching etc..) before becoming a skipper. In this case we can consider a "checkout" to see if you could become trainee skipper (where you would sail with another experienced member or trainee skippers). Before I contact you, try and join regular member sailings :)
3) If you would like to become a skipper but need to get more familiar with our boats, need to get more sailing experience in genral or are a little rusty, I suggest that you to go sailing as much as you can and then notify me as soon as you think you could become a trainee skipper according to point nr2
