2023 Land Ethics Awards
Purpose:
The Land Ethics Awards honor and recognize the creative use of native plants in the landscape, sustainable and regenerative design, and ethical land management and construction practices.

Eligibility for nomination:
Nominees may be private individuals, businesses, design professionals (including landscape architects and site engineers), conservation and preservation organizations or local, state and federal agencies involved with environmental protection. School groups may also be nominated for relevant team projects. Individuals, non-profit organizations, government agencies, community groups and business professionals are encouraged to apply. Nominated projects must have a duration of at least six months and no more than four years.

Nominations can be made for one of 3 categories:
  • Best Community Effort
  • Best Individual Effort
  • Best Large-Scale Project
Judges may also award a Project of Special Distinction for a submitted project they determine is worthy.

Judging/Selection Process:
Applications are due electronically by Tuesday, Jan. 31 recipients will be selected by a jury of professionals in the field of design, preservation and conservation. Selections will be made by Feb. 10, 2023. The Land Ethics Awards will be presented at the 2023 Land Ethics Symposium, which will be presented virtually on Feb. 16, 2023.

Judging Criteria:
Primary consideration will be given for exceptional:
  • Use of plants native to the region where the project is located
  • Sustainable and regenerative design
  • Use of best management practices.
Submissions will also be evaluated for:
  • Creativity in problem-solving
  • Habitat creation and connection to other green space
  • Aesthetics
  • Plant Stewardship Index score
  • Educational and Interpretive Opportunities
  • Material longevity
  • Volunteer involvement
  • Reclamation of a degraded site.
