Thank you for your interest in mentoring a SCEC Intern in support of developing the next generation of geoscientists. Research mentors play a crucial role in the success of students pursuing STEM degrees. Mentors provide opportunities and training to students who would otherwise not engage in geoscience research. Mentors also benefit from the contributions a mentee can make to research and knowledge.
- SURE interns will spend the summer with their research mentor at their institution or field site.
- SOURCES interns are supervised remotely and meet with their mentor virtually. Do you have pre-collected seismic or geodetic data needing analysis that a student can conduct remotely? Do you need a student with programming skills to optimize existing code?
SCEC research mentors will:
- Develop an intern research project that can be successfully completed during the summer.
- Participate in the intern-mentor matching process to ensure compatibility and a successful research experience (mentors will review 3-5 student applications).
- Mentor and supervise an undergraduate student for 8-10 weeks. The length of the internship will be based on project needs before the start of the internship.
- Meet regularly with the intern to review activity, provide guidance, and discuss milestones.
- Host an intern visit at your institution or research site (SOURCES mentors only).
When completing this survey, ensure you provide enough information about your research project and needs. The project should clearly outline intern's components and contribution of the research.
Note that completing this survey does not obligate researchers to participate in the program or accept a student. If a project is selected, SCEC will reach out to the researcher to confirm participation and to initiate the intern matching process.
