Vaping Education for Teachers with Margaret Coleman

This workshop will share information regarding national and regional trends in youth vape use.  Maggie will talk about the Dartmouth Health Vaping Prevention toolkit and walkthrough of resources for educators and caregivers.  Attendees will learn how to engage with youth regarding vaping education, learn policies aimed at the vaping industry, and be provided actionable resources for educators who are concerned about student use.

Maggie Coleman received her MPH from The Dartmouth Institute within Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine. As part of Dartmouth Health’s Population and Community Health team, she engages community organizations, schools, and individuals around youth vaping prevention. Prior to entering the world of public health, Maggie received her American Montessori Society credential as lead guide of a toddler classroom in Seattle.

Social Media Safety

Social media is everywhere and is increasingly intertwined into our daily lives. While there are benefits to social media, there are also risks that children, teenagers, and adults should avoid. This session will cover some of the various apps/platforms that are used among children and teens, and what we as parents and educators can do to keep them safe while they explore the digital world. We’ll also dive into the importance of being aware of our digital footprint and the risks associated with sharing information online.

Eugene is a product of the Newport school system and holds a B.A. in education. This is his 16th year as a teacher in the Newport School District and he is currently teaching computer science at Newport Middle School.

Harmonious Beginnings

My name is Nikki, and I am the lead teacher at Newport Montessori School in the preschool and kindergarten classroom. I have my Montessori Training Diploma in Early Childhood and I have worked at NMS with this age group for 9 years. During that time, it has become my passion to watch students as they adapt, integrate, cultivate, grasp, and flourish in this unique classroom setting. A child’s trajectory for the school day begins when they walk through the door. A positive start can mean everything in terms of their education and emotional well-being. Our class utilizes music throughout the day to support and “center” the group as a whole as well as individual students. Please join me during my seminar as we discuss the importance and integration of “harmonious beginnings.”

Reading Intervention
Reading is at the heart of learning but what are the best methods, technology, and materials to use to help every child develop and thrive as a reader? We will discuss the research behind the “Reading Wars”: Phonics-based Science of Reading versus Balanced Literacy/Guided Reading, and find the best of both worlds. This workshop will also take a practical look at innovative and effective reading apps and websites to engage students, improve vocabulary, comprehension and problem solving, and build foundational reading skills.

Libby Curran is a Special Educator and Children’s App Developer.
