CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Over the course of 13 weeks, 10 Teaching Artists will meet weekly as a cohort to create and share in a community of peer artists and engage in professional development together. TAs will work as part of a teaching team with an emerging teaching artist and in consultation with high school aged youth, as well as staff. Teaching teams meeting weekly to co-design curriculum, do weekly planning and engage in weekly reflection. Teaching teams are responsible for co-facilitating one course in Marwen’s fall visual arts program offerings.
We are also hiring one teaching artist to lead the Marwen Lab Residency. The Lab Residency is a year long immersive program designed to support high-school-aged artists in the development of their arts practice and foster a community of support amongst emerging young artists. Teaching artists work with staff and emerging teaching artists to facilitate weekly, in-person meetings in which residents develop creative concepts, hone their artistic voices and engage in art-making.
ABOUT MARWEN:
Marwen educates and inspires young people. We provide year-round, out-of-school visual arts, pre-college programming, and career programs to young people from nearly every neighborhood in Chicago.
Teaching artists and education staff utilize the tools of creative youth development to facilitate programs in a wide range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, analog and digital photography, printmaking, animation, fashion design, and mixed media. **Marwen is planning to run in-person classes, with limited virtual options. In-person classes will meet weekly at Marwen and adhere to safety protocols. Virtual classes will meet weekly on Zoom. In-person courses may transition to virtual, based on public health circumstances.
**Marwen is hiring a TA cohort to participate in both fall + spring terms (no application required for spring). Spring term programming timeline and in-person/virtual/hybrid plans will be decided by end of fall term.
STRONG CANDIDATES FOR THE TA PROGRAM:
- Previous facilitation of Chicago youth arts programs
- Commitment to creative youth development values of racial justice, collective action, and youth voice
- Commitment to building and contributing to collaborative environments, including cohorts, co-facilitation models, and teaching teams
- Have an artistic practice (Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Fashion, Digital Photography, Printmaking/Print Media, Photography, etc.)
PROGRAM TIMELINE FOR FALL TERM:
August 15: Application deadline
Week of August 16 - 24: Interviews with select candidates
By August 27: Notification of cohort selection and teaching team pairing
Week of Sept 6: Program launches - cohort and teaching teams
Week of Oct 13: Courses begin
Week of Dec 16: Courses end
Week of Dec 13: Reflection and celebration
TIME COMMITMENT:
13 weeks: Sept 7 - Dec 15 (week of Nov. 21st off); 10 hours/week, mostly afternoons, exact schedule TBD
- Weekly cohort meeting (~1 to 1.5 hrs)
- Weekly planning and reflection meetings with teaching team (~1.5 hrs)
- 8 week studio course (2.5 hrs for in-person classes, 2 hrs for virtual classes)
- Additional planning time, art kit/supply support, individual check-ins, etc (~2hrs)
PAYMENT:
TAs are paid $45/hr for 10hrs/week for 13 weeks in the fall.
