Dear Prospective Academy students and parents,

We appreciate your interest in the Academy of Health and Biosciences here at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School. The Academy of Health and Biosciences will provide students with an academic foundation and technical skills that will enable them to continue their education beyond high school and obtain employment or embark on their college journey.  The content and skills at the core of the curriculum provide insight into the health and biomedical field and careers. Even if a student chooses not to pursue a career or major directly related to health and biomedical sciences, they will have participated in an incredible and exciting high school journey that prepared them for any career or post-secondary education plan.

The Health and Biosciences program consists of two pathways, PLTW - Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions. The Biomedical Sciences pathway is offered as a 4-year track (students beginning as 9th graders) utilizing the national PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Biomedical Sciences curriculum which may lead to earning college credit. Students complete the following courses: Principles of Biomedical Sciences (9th), Human Body Systems (10th), Medical Interventions (11th), and Biomedical Innovations Capstone (12th).  The PLTW pathway foster skills such as communication, professionalism, legal responsibility, ethics, safety practices, and interpersonal dynamics. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to problems.

The Health Professions pathway is a 3-year track and students will have the opportunity to earn nationally recognized certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant and college credit. The courses in this pathway are Foundations of Medicine and Health Science (10th), Structure and Functions of the Human Body (11th ), and Certified Clinical Medical Assisting (12th). The Health Professions pathway uses project and problem-based learning, clinical experiences, as well as classroom and lab instruction to teach students about the field of health care.

Students applying should possess a high interest in the health and biomedical sciences, exemplary attendance, self-motivation, discipline, initiative, grade conscious attitude, leadership qualities, maturity, and good communication skills.
 
This interest form is for rising 9th graders interested in the PLTW- Biomedical Sciences ONLY for the upcoming 2023/24 school year.

*SPECIAL NOTE: Students will not be allowed to transfer between the two pathways (Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions)

*SPECIAL NOTE:  The Health and Biosciences Program is NOT available to out of boundary students. Only students zoned for Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School may apply. School Finder Link
