AAC Community Cat Medical Voucher Application
In an effort to improve the lives of outdoor community cats in their home territory, the Austin Animal Center has a voucher program to help provide financial assistance for sick and injured community cats residing in Austin and unincorporated Travis County. This program complies with the City of Austin No Kill Policies adopted by Austin City Council March 11, 2010. Funding is limited and contingent upon approval of available operating funds each fiscal year.

Eligible cats for voucher services are:
  • Sick or injured Community Cats: free-roaming cats who do not have traditional owners. They may be friendly, semi-friendly or feral and may or may not have caregivers.
  • Community Cats that live in the City of Austin or parts of Travis County served by City of Austin Animal Services.
  • Cats who are owned, in foster/rescue (with the intention of adoption) or planned to be adopted are NOT eligible.
  • We do NOT offer vouchers for general wellness visits or spay/neuter, but please email communitycats@austintexas.gov for information on other resources available to you.

To apply for a voucher:
  • First, make an appointment with one of the following contracted veterinary clinics. Do let them know the cat is a community cat who you are requesting a medical voucher. Then you must plan trapping the cat around this appointment. If the vet clinic you have selected allows walk-ins, please proceed to the next step.
  • Once you have made an appointment, enter your email address at the bottom of this page to start your medical voucher request.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES:

The medical voucher program helps keep community cats in the area that they call home. Medical vouchers are the best tool for adult cats which are experiencing a medical issue which is impacting their quality of life, such as upper respiratory infections, limping, scrapes or cuts, loss of appetite, difficulty eating, lumps, etc.

A voucher is NOT the appropriate course of action if the community cat you are looking out for is experiencing an urgent, life threatening issue. Examples of urgent medical concerns include:
  • Difficulty breathing in a matter which indicates that the animal may be in distress
  • Total unresponsiveness
  • Seizures
  • Ingestion of a toxic or foreign substance
  • Profuse bleeding
  • Broken or degloved limbs
  • Severe pain
If the community cat is experiencing an urgent, life threatening medical issue, please do the following:
  • If the community cat is contained and/or easy to catch due to being immobile, call 311 and ask to speak to an APO (Animal Protection Officer).
  • If the community cat is experiencing a medical emergency between 11am-5 pm, you can take the cat to Austin Animal Center. Let staff know the cat is an injured stray.
                    7201 Levander Loop
                    Building A
                    Austin, Texas 78702
  • If the community cat is experiencing a medical emergency after 5 pm, you can take the cat to the Austin Animal Services contracted Emergency Vet clinic listed below and let them know the cat is an injured stray. They will admit the cat and treat it for the shelter and the cat will be transferred to the Austin Animal Center in the morning.
