The medical voucher program helps keep community cats in the area that they call home. Medical vouchers are the best tool for
adult cats which are experiencing a medical issue which is impacting their quality of life, such as upper respiratory infections, limping, scrapes or cuts, loss of appetite, difficulty eating, lumps, etc.
A voucher is NOT the appropriate course of action if the community cat you are looking out for is experiencing an urgent, life threatening issue. Examples of urgent medical concerns include:
- Difficulty breathing in a matter which indicates that the animal may be in distress
- Total unresponsiveness
- Seizures
- Ingestion of a toxic or foreign substance
- Profuse bleeding
- Broken or degloved limbs
- Severe pain
If the community cat is experiencing an urgent, life threatening medical issue, please do the following:
- If the community cat is contained and/or easy to catch due to being immobile, call 311 and ask to speak to an APO (Animal Protection Officer).
- If the community cat is experiencing a medical emergency between 11am-5 pm, you can take the cat to Austin Animal Center. Let staff know the cat is an injured stray.
