Taking refuge in the Three Jewels – Buddha, Dharma and Sangha – is the gateway through which we enter Buddhism as a faith. The main vow for refuge is not killing a human being, while the other four vows are choices: not taking what has not been freely given; not telling lies; no sexual misconduct; no intoxicants.

Taking bodhisattva vows: making the promise to engage in the bodhisattva’s training, you can choose to take wishing bodhisattva vows or engaging bodhisattva vows.

You can take refuge without taking bodhisattva vows, however you cannot take bodhisattva vows without taking refuge first.

More information about refuge and bodhisattva vows can be found at our library: https://www.venerable-namgyel-online-sangha.com/textslibrary

Who can attend: VNOS members only. Those sincerely wishing to take refuge and/or bodhisattva vows, to make the commitments involved. Those who would like to re-take their vows are welcome to attend also. To take bodhisattva vows, renew your refuge vows first.

‘Buddha Shakyamuni's Descent from the Heaven of Thirty-three' after three months giving teachings to Buddha's mother, who had been reborn in Indra's heaven, in order to repay her kindness and to benefit the gods. This day signifies Buddha’s return to the human realm and continuously benefiting us, extremely important for Buddhists.
