Oxford Nightline Training Form

Thank you for your interest in training with Oxford Nightline! We are a independent listening, support and information service run for and by students of Oxford and Oxford Brookes universities. We aim to provide every student in Oxford with the opportunity to talk to someone in confidence from 8pm to 8am every day during Oxford University term time.

In order to train with us, you need to be available for 3 consecutive weekends. For Hilary Term these dates are the Saturdays of the 27th Jan, 3rd Feb and 10th Feb OR the Sundays of the 28th Jan, 4th Feb and 11th Feb. You'll need to be available for all 3 Saturdays or all 3 Sundays.

No previous experience is needed for training - we welcome trainees from all backgrounds. In the meantime, since the vast majority of our calls are taken in English, we do want to mention that volunteers should be confidently fluent in English. It is also important that you do not tell anyone that you are training with us, or (if you are selected) that you are a volunteer. We are an anonymous service, and it is our priority to protect the anonymity of both our callers and our listening volunteers.

If you are accepted as a listening volunteer, we will retain your contact details for the duration of time in which you volunteer with us. You will be asked to attend an office induction session and commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per term for at least 2 full terms. Please consider whether you will be able to keep these commitments before signing up to train.

Nothing you write here will be taken into consideration during the selection process. All the information you submit on this form will be confidential to your trainers and the training organisers and will only be used for training purposes. After one year we will remove any personally identifiable data that you give us. You reserve the right to ask us to modify or remove the data you provide at any point.

We will follow up on form responses closer to the start of our next training cycle in January.

If you have any pressing questions about training next term, please don't hesitate to send us an email at training@oxfordnightline.org!

Are you available to complete at least two full terms as a volunteer following the completion of training? *
In order to be eligible to be trained as a listening volunteer by Oxford Nightline, it is expected that an individual will spend at least two full terms as a volunteer. If a volunteer is unable to meet this commitment, you are still more than welcome to apply, but prospective volunteers who can meet this commitment will be prioritised. In most cases, this means your last opportunity to train is Michaelmas Term (October) of your graduation year.
Are you confidently fluent in English? *
The vast majority of our calls are taken in English, and it is important that volunteers can comfortably provide support in the language.

Do you have any unspent convictions? *
Please select “Yes” if you have any convictions that are not yet spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The term ‘convictions’ is used to refer to any sentences or disposals issued by a court. If all your convictions are spent, you can tick “No”. If you’re not sure if your convictions are unspent or spent, you can use a tool available at www.disclosurecalculator.org.uk and read guidance at hub.unlock.org.uk/roa. A conviction does not automatically prevent you from training - only those that would materially impact the work of a volunteer will lead to this. Our policy on disclosures of unspent convictions is available on our website. If you select "Yes", then we will send you an email asking you to provide more details.
