Should UoA change its GPA system to account for Covid-19's disruption to studying?

We're calling on our University to adopt a temporary policy allowing all students who achieve any passing grade for any course that is less than the GPA they began this Semester with to have that course noted as a "PASS" and the result exempted from their GPA calculation, due to Covid-19.

George and Emma, AUSA's President and Education Vice-President, have another meeting with the University to push for this next week. To get this over the line though, we need to show just how overwhelming the student support for this is from across our various faculties. Thanks so much for taking the time to fill this out!

If you do support this policy proposal, what are the reasons you feel are compelling?

Covid-19 is disrupting everyone's study in different ways - this addresses the disruption in a way that is fair and equitable for everyone.

This policy already applies for students who score between a C- and a C+ for a course and a potential effect of this only applying to grades between C- and C+ is that those who are worried about their GPA dropping might default to perform below the level they can achieve at in order to have a course exempted from their GPA calculation.

GPAs shouldn't be representative of our natural performance at this time because these aren't normal times.

Several International Universities are doing this - we should follow in their stead.

GPAs are an important part of the choices students have after study - such as future postgraduate study or entrance to the workforce. It's unfair that Covid-19 will impact on that and this policy addresses that unfairness.

This will help Student Wellbeing because it will keep students engaged in their studies even if they are worried about poor academic performance due to the disruption made by Covid-19.

This is a fair way to accommodate for a lack of access to University resources and the fact that some teaching and research cannot be effectively translated online.
