Spanish Classes & Research Study at DSL
DSL is teaming up with Emily Ibrahim for her PhD research study to bring you summer Spanish classes!

This is the first study of its kind to investigate the second language acquisition of children with Down syndrome in the foreign language classroom and will hopefully pave the way for more children with Ds to participate with their typical peers in language classes.  Spanish classes will be offered daily during our Summer Education Enrichment Program, but participation in the class does not automatically enroll your child in the research study.

To be a part of the research, your child will undergo just a few quick assessments before classes begin and after classes end. See below for more details and to express your interest in your child participating in the study.

Pre-Spanish Class Assessments
If your child participates in the study they will meet with Mrs. Ibrahim once before classes begin for a 30 to 45 minute session to participate in the following assessments:

1. English receptive vocabulary (students look at some pictures and point to the word Mrs. Ibrahim says)
2. English expressive vocabulary (students look at a picture and say what it is)
3. Non-word repetition (students listen to recordings of silly pretend words and repeat them)

*This meeting will take place sometime in the two weeks before SEE camp begins at a time of your choosing.

Your child will also meet with Jenny or her assistant Phoebe for 10 to 15 minutes during the first day or two of camp to participate in the following assessment:

1. Non-verbal cognition (students look at pictures and choose which option best fits a pattern)
Post-Spanish Class Assessments
If your child participates in the study, they will meet with Mrs. Ibrahim once after classes end for a session which will last 45 minutes to an hour to participate in the following assessments:

1. English receptive vocabulary
2. English expressive vocabulary
3. Spanish receptive vocabulary
4. Spanish expressive vocabulary

*This session will take place sometime during the two weeks after SEE camp ends at a time of your choosing .
