Shadow Day 2023 Cal Mentor Sign-Up
Welcome, Mentors! This form is an expression of your interest and commitment to the position of Shadow Day Mentor 2023 on the day of Monday, April 17th, 2023 from 10:00am to 3:30pm and assume the associated responsibilities with the position. Please fill out this form by March 25, 2023. We look forward to working with you!

About Shadow Day: YWCA Berkeley/Oakland has organized its annual Shadow Day program for its 29th year, inviting high school students from the East Bay to shadow a UC Berkeley student (you!), and explore their future goals. You'll have the opportunity to take your high school mentee to your classes, show them around campus, and help them experience undergraduate life. Can't hang out with your mentee the whole day? No problem! Feel free to drop off your shadow at the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland office (on Bancroft Ave), where there will be activities and workshops running while you attend to other responsibilities.

Organizers of Shadow Day intentionally recruit and connect high school students with current UC Berkeley students who share similar interests and backgrounds to build community, share resources, and to be able to support each other's journeys in navigating higher education and beyond. Altogether, Shadow Day aims to increase access and equity within higher education, and serves as a space for student leaders to connect, forge new paths, and build collective power.

Please direct any questions you have to shadowday@ywca-berkeley.org!

Did you attend high school in the East Bay? If so, which school *
What were the biggest challenges when you were in high school? (e.g. school, home, friends, extracurriculars, etc) *
It’s challenging to make perfect matches between Cal and high school students for Shadow Day. Do you have any restrictions or special interests you would like to request or share with your high school “shadow”?

(ex: gender preference, or saying "I have back-to-back, non-stop Computer Science classes Thursday and no variation, so would be better to have shadow actually interested in computer science")
Shadow Day 2023 is on Monday, April 17th; what classes/activities do you usually have on Monday's? Feel free to list as many or as little classes/activities as you feel comfortable sharing, or a brief description of them as well!
In order to match you with the best possible high school shadow... we want to know more about you!

You may like to do both, but which one do you prefer?

FIRST SHADOW ENCOUNTER / PICKING UP SHADOW AT YWCA:

You will be assigned a specific arrival time to pick up your shadow at the YWCA. It may be as early as 9:30AM and as late as 10:30AM.  Can you rearrange your schedule to have this ENTIRE time frame open? (i.e. skip class, wake up early, reschedule work shift, etc.)

Required

DROPPING OFF SHADOW AT END OF DAY:

You will need to drop off your shadow at the YWCA at an assigned time, anytime between 2-3:30pm.  Do you have flexibility in your schedule to drop off your shadow anytime during this time frame?  Your drop-off time will depend on your shadow's high school departure time.  Each high school leaves at a different time but will leave somewhere between 2 - 3:30 PM from the YWCA.
