The ESSENCE project is working towards a common live sound qualification that will work well in all European markets and vocational education systems. These European Sound Specialists (ESS) will operate at EQF Level 5 - they have specialised in sound engineering on top of a broad set of skills and practical experience in event engineering as a whole, are able to work autonomously in challenging environments and solve abstract problems, manage and supervise small teams and evaluate both themselves and their teams. An ESS can oversee setup and takedown work of moderately complex sound systems, ensure systematic testing, calibration and quality control, can offer input during the planning stage and feedback after the production wraps up, and performs sound operator duties in cooperation with stage assistants, systems engineers, radio engineers, IT infrastructure and other fields, as required by the production.
