Don Walker Memorial Scholarship Application 2024

The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000.00 will be awarded annually to a recipient between the ages of 18 and 21 years of age who is currently a full-time student or who is registered in a Canadian Post-Secondary institution. Applicants who are not successful may re-apply in subsequent years but an individual will only be awarded this scholarship once.

Scholarship Criteria
Don Walker was a long-time curler, Past President and Life Member of the Calgary Curling Club who gave tirelessly of himself through volunteerism to promote the sport and the Club. The scholarship in his name will be awarded to the recipient who most exemplifies these qualities. Applicants must live within a 50 km radius from the City of Calgary for a period of 2 years prior to the application and be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

Post Secondary Institution Status -The applicant must provide written proof of full-time attendance and satisfactory academic standing at a Canadian Post Secondary Institution or in the case of High School students, written proof of acceptance to an institution following High School completion. If proof of acceptance is not available at the time of application, it will be required prior to the disbursements of funds.

Calgary Curling Club Affiliation - The applicant or one of their parents, or legal guardians, must be members in good standing of the Calgary Curling Club or one of its Associate Leagues. Please indicate the parent or legal guardian full name and the league they play in. If they currently do not play in a league but are a rover or shareholder please indicate this as well.

Volunteerism/Leadership - The applicant must show proof of their significant involvement in leadership and/or volunteer activities in a not-for-profit organization or community through letters of support from two independent references.

Age Eligibility - Applicants must show proof of age eligibility and be between the ages of 18 and 21 years as of December 31 in the calendar year of application.

Letters of Reference - Two letters of reference from independent adults are required to support the applicant’s contributions to a community group or not-for-profit agency through volunteer hours and/or leadership. These letters may not be written by a relative of the applicant.

Personal Letter - The applicant will provide a letter, maximum 2 pages, describing their contributions to the community or the sport of curling through volunteerism and why they should be considered for this scholarship.

Application - Deadline for applications is June 30th 2024The completed application form with all required documents attached must be submitted to the Calgary Curling Club prior to the application deadline.

Applications will be reviewed and selections made by the committee and the successful applicant will be notified. Presentation of the scholarship will take place annually at the Calgary Curling Club Past Presidents’ Dinner in September.
