By Way of Revolution is a performance art workshop led by artist Helina Metaferia and designed for women-identifying BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). The workshop investigates how histories of protest inform our present day moment, and the powerful yet often overlooked role that BIPOC women (both cis and trans) play in them. The workshop will rely on performance gestures of resilience to explore how institutionalized and systemic trauma gets stored in the body, and provide creative and tangible tools for self-care and communal care as methods for sustainability. The artist will lead participants through a series of writing, mindfulness, and somatic and performance exercises based on histories of social change movements.

This workshop is part of a larger project at Recess by Metaferia, The Meeting Place, for those who wish to engage in embodied and somatic practices as a way of activating epigenetics in order to release lived or inherited trauma of systemic oppression stored in the body. The project is designed to provide a supportive structure to an open-ended question: what does rest, love, care, and liberation look like for BIPOC women in the 21st century? The project takes as inspiration the many meetings that women have historically organized throughout the global diaspora to strengthen each other in community, including the rituals of celebration, family gatherings, places of worship, protest, political organizing, and care work. Metaferia has invited several BIPOC women led organizations to facilitate additional workshops as part of this project.

Participants of this workshop have the option to volunteer to be photographed on the same day of the workshop, for a series of collages that Metaferia will create, combining archives of historical liberation movements with the images of workshop participants.

Refreshments will be provided during the workshop, and there are restaurants and coffee shops within a block of the venue.

The workshop is for adults 18 years and older, though minors 12 years and older can attend if accompanied by a parent or with a parental waiver form.
