Education Docent Application

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Education Docent for the Freshkills Park Alliance!

As an Education Docent you will help increase public access and educational opportunities at Freshkills Park.

About the Program:

The Freshkills Park Alliance education staff will:

  • Provide trainings and resources to lead educational and public programs 

  • Provide Freshkills Park Alliance swag, including a T-shirt, hat, and printed materials

  • Schedule all programs and communicate dates and logistics in a timely manner

  • Lead a beginning and end of season check-in with docent educators

  • Act as the lead educator on programs within NYC Parks or DSNY jurisdiction

  • Be primarily responsible for upholding safety regulations for programs held within NYC parks or DSNY jurisdiction and accompany Education Docents at all times within DSNY jurisdiction

  • Offer Education Docent and a friend or family member programming participation opportunities (March-November).


The Education Docent will:

  • Learn about the history, ecology, and design of Freshkills Park using provided resources and trainings

  • Follow all safety regulations, including only entering the areas under DSNY jurisdiction when accompanied by an Park or Alliance staff member, complete a waiver before programs,  and ensure participants have completed waivers

  • Wear something (T-shirt, hat, and/or name badge) identifying themselves as an Alliance docent while supporting programs

  • Participate in a training at the beginning of the programming season and as needed

  • Commit to supporting at least 6 programs per year

  • Commit to supporting different programs per program year (i.e. not just signing up for kayaking, nature walks, or tabling).

  • Docents will help foster a safe and inclusive environment for all staff, participants and fellow docents

  • Notify FKPA staff before their scheduled program if they cannot make it or will be late. We ask that you please let us know as soon as possible.

  • Arrive 30 minutes to 1 hour before programs are scheduled to begin and 30 minutes after for clean up if necessary (program dependent)

  • Check in with Park or Alliance staff at the beginning and end of the programming season (March- November) to review shared expectations

  • Communicate any concerns to Park or Alliance staff in a timely manner

  • Fully read and understand the Education Docent Expectations and Guidelines
