Now hiring: Executive Editor for a nonprofit news startup in Wichita
THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Beacon seeks a forward-thinking Executive Editor to build and lead a brand new newsroom in Wichita, Kansas. Launching in Summer 2021, The Wichita Beacon has significant financial backing from local and national funders, including the American Journalism Project and the Wichita Community Foundation, and will grow to a sustainable organization that provides Wichitans with the local news they deserve.

The successful candidate is an experienced newsroom leader with a passion for local journalism, and a track record of building and managing teams that produce impactful stories and a strong perspective on equitable, audience-driven journalism. You would be at the forefront of a movement to make local news a foundational part of civic life in Wichita by enabling the kind of journalism that holds power to account while being accountable to the communities it serves.

THE ORGANIZATION:

Founded in April 2019 and publishing since March 2020, The Beacon is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit digital news outlet focused on journalism in the public interest, covering Kansas and Missouri. Beacon stories are revelatory, contextual, data-driven and solutions-driven. With the backing of major funders, The Beacon is poised for rapid and substantial growth of its current and planned newsrooms across the two states, and currently operates a newsroom in Kansas City. Newsrooms will be locally and independently led and managed, with business and operating support, as well as shared editorial services, across the network.

THE ROLE:

The Executive Editor, based in the Wichita metro, will build and scale the newsroom. You will oversee daily editorial functions of the newsroom, including working with reporters and editors to identify and deploy community-driven projects and services. You will lead the charge in making The Wichita Beacon’s journalism worthy of support from its audience and make a case for local funding. You’ll work in close partnership with The Beacon’s Executive Director, who leads development, HR, finance and marketing, and The Beacon’s Founder & Publisher, Kelsey Ryan, who leads editorial, product and audience strategy for the network.
