The oak savanna located at the corner of Washington and Arden Avenues at Kiwanis Park has become a beloved destination for relaxation, recreation, and education in the Village of Brookfield. The Brookfield Conservation Commission (Commission) led the ecological restoration of the savanna and worked with the village and other partners, such as Chicago Wilderness, to install trails and interpretive signage.
The Commission, with the help of dedicated volunteers, has been working for several years to restore a second 15-acre wooded area in Brookfield located just south of the railroad tracks from Kiwanis Park/Village Hall, east of Salt Creek, and west of the South Hollywood neighborhood, referred to as "the site" in this survey.
The next step in the project is developing a plan to complete the restoration and install trails, signage, and other amenities. To complete this portion of the project, the Commission applied for and was awarded technical assistance from the National Park Service (NPS). A task force comprising of residents, commissioners, local historians, and NPS community planner is gathering public feedback to shape the plan.
