The fisheries sector in Guinea is of paramount importance to its society and economy, with fish products representing one of the main sources of protein at the lowest price. More than 1.5 million people depend directly on fish products for their livelihood. The sector also plays an important role in the country's export industry, with nearly 10,000 tonnes of fish products exported in 2017, generating a trade value of USD 38 million. Yet the Gulf of Guinea is known to have considerable problems with illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Code for Africa has partnered with GRID-Arendal to launch a stipend-based environmental journalism fellowship that provides funding for journalists to research and investigate the illegal fishing sector in the Gulf of Guinea.
Fellows will use data, visualizations, digital mapping, and satellite imagery analysis to produce investigative reports that promote fisheries transparency to help the country combat IUU fishing in its marine waters.
