CUMMW is a four-week workshop offered to all Columbia undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about real world mathematical modelling.
The workshop consists of a series of hands-on 90-minute seminars led by faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and takes place between January 9th – January 29th, 2021.
The workshop also serves as preparation for undergraduate students interested in participating in the Mathematical/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modelling (MCM/ICM), taking place February 4-8, 2021.
We offer two tracks: session lead and team advisor. Interested postdocs and graduate students are welcome to apply for either or both of the tracks.
1. Session Lead. Co-leading workshop sessions is also encouraged. As a session lead you will
a. Prepare a 15-20 minutes presentation that introduces the participants to a mathematical topic relevant to mathematical modelling and simulation.
b. Prepare a set of recommended references that help participants learn more about the topic on their own time.
c. Prepare a set of sample modelling tasks that build on the basic topic/model just introduced.
2. Team Advisor. Co-advising teams is also possible and encouraged.
As a team advisor, you will be coaching a small number of teams during the workshop sessions (e.g., in breakout rooms) and be willing to meet with your teams outside the workshop scheduled times for questions and further advice. Coaching the teams should address the development of mathematical, computational and scientific writing skills.
Registration deadline: December 23rd, 2020
