Applied Music Lessons through the Joint Music Program:
All current CWRU students can take applied music lessons for academic credit through the Joint Music Program with Cleveland Institute of Music faculty members.

Before the first week of class:
1. Complete the Pre-Registration Form:- Music Minors and Non-Majors: Submit the form each term to agree to the terms and conditions of secondary lessons.
- Music Majors: Submit the form each term to request registration in secondary lessons.
2. Prerequisite for Beginners:
- Students with little or no prior experience in guitar, piano, or voice must first take the corresponding Group Music Class for Beginners (MUSP 100 + MUSP 130) before enrolling in secondary lessons.
- Students must have a basic foundation for reading music or complete MUTH 103 or MUTH 104 before enrolling in secondary lessons.
- Begin lessons for 1.00 credit units and then discuss increasing to 2.00 credit units with your instructor.
Instructional Fees:
Music majors are not subject to instructional fees.
- Billing Information: Instructional fees (charged separately from tuition) will be added to your term bill at the end of the drop/add period each semester.
- Rates per semester:
- $750 for 1.00 credit units (7.5 hrs of study; 30-min weekly lessons)
- $1,500 for 2.00 credit units (15 hrs of study; 60-min weekly lessons)
- Tuition Details: Tuition rates vary depending on your level of study or degree program. For example, undergraduate students enrolled in fewer than 12 credit units (less than full-time) may incur additional tuition charges. Graduate and professional students may have different tuition rates and fee structures. If you have question for concerns, please contact Student Financial Services for clarification.
- Tuition Waiver: Instructional fees associated with applied music lessons offered through the Joint Music Program cannot be waived or covered by a tuition waiver.
- Refund Policy: Refunds for instructional fees cannot be guaranteed after the end of the Drop/Add period. ** If you choose not to enroll in lessons, notify the Music Office before the end of the Drop/Add Period to avoid instructional fees.
Enrollment Process:
1. Register in SIS:
- Make every effort to register for lessons and schedule your weekly lesson time with your instructor before each new term.
2. Studio Placement:
- Your placement will be assigned by the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM).
- Enrollment permission will be granted in SIS, and steps for registration and contacting your instructor will be sent to you by the Music Office. Locate the course in your "permissions" tab in SIS.
3. Scheduling Conflicts:
- If your schedule does not align with your assigned instructor, please reply to your confirmation email to make alternative arrangements.
4. Finalize Registration:
- Complete your registration before the end of the Drop/Add Period (2nd Friday of the semester).
- If you choose not to enroll, notify the Music Office before the end of the drop/add period to avoid instructional fees.
Lesson Format and Procedures:
- Hours of Study (Per Semester):
- 1.00 credit units = 7.5 total hours (30-min weekly lessons)
- 2.00 credit units = 15 total hours (60-min weekly lessons)
- Performance Requirements: There are no additional performance requirements outside of the individual lessons. Music Ensembles (MUEN) are open to all students.
- Credit and Enrollment: Lessons can be used toward free elective credit, but they do not satisfy general breadth requirements. Lessons cannot be audited or taken as fellowship courses.
- Academic Standing: Students must remain in good academic standing to continue lessons.
- Studio Assignments: Students typically study with the same instructor unless otherwise indicated by the Music Office.
- Instruments: Students are responsible for providing their own instrument or securing authorization to borrow a school-owned instrument. Eligible CWRU students enrolled in Department of Music ensembles may apply for an instrument locker.
- Access to Practice Rooms: CWRU students taking lessons through the Joint Music Program will be given access to CWRU practice rooms. Students taking lessons directly through CIM do not have access to CWRU practice facilities.
Practice Rooms, Borrowing Instruments, and Lockers:
- Facilities Information Hub: Review our Facilities Information Hub for detailed information about practice rooms, building hours, card access, room reservations, instrument storage, and more.
- After-Hours Access: Students enrolled in MUAP or MUEN will automatically receive after-hours/card swipe access to CWRU buildings following the end of the Drop/Add period.
- Need to borrow or store an instrument? Review our Lockers + Borrowing Instruments Policies and submit the appropriate request forms. Lockers and instruments are available to students enrolled in an ensemble that requires that instrument.
- Harp Students: Review the "Policy for Harp Students" on the Participation Information page for details.
- Percussionists: Music majors with percussion as a primary instrument and non-majors taking percussion lessons will be issued access to the lock box/key for the Percussion Studio located in Denison Hall. The Percussion Studio can be used by reservation, though walk-ins are permitted when the studio is not in use. ** To request this specialized access, review the "Controlled Rooms + Secure Storage" section on our Buildings + Access page.
