    • 1.00 credit units = 7.5 total hours (30-min weekly lessons)
    • 2.00 credit units = 15 total hours (60-min weekly lessons)
  • Performance Requirements: There are no additional performance requirements outside of the individual lessons. Music Ensembles (MUEN) are open to all students.
  • Credit and Enrollment: Lessons can be used toward free elective credit, but they do not satisfy general breadth requirements. Lessons cannot be audited or taken as fellowship courses.
  • Academic Standing: Students must remain in good academic standing to continue lessons.
  • Studio Assignments: Students typically study with the same instructor unless otherwise indicated by the Music Office.
  • Instruments: Students are responsible for providing their own instrument or securing authorization to borrow a school-owned instrument. Eligible CWRU students enrolled in Department of Music ensembles may apply for an instrument locker.
  • Access to Practice Rooms: CWRU students taking lessons through the Joint Music Program will be given access to CWRU practice rooms. Students taking lessons directly through CIM do not have access to CWRU practice facilities.

Practice Rooms, Borrowing Instruments, and Lockers:

  • Facilities Information Hub: Review our Facilities Information Hub for detailed information about practice rooms, building hours, card access, room reservations, instrument storage, and more.
  • After-Hours Access: Students enrolled in MUAP or MUEN will automatically receive after-hours/card swipe access to CWRU buildings following the end of the Drop/Add period.
  • Need to borrow or store an instrument? Review our Lockers + Borrowing Instruments Policies and submit the appropriate request forms. Lockers and instruments are available to students enrolled in an ensemble that requires that instrument.
  • Harp Students: Review the "Policy for Harp Students" on the Participation Information page for details.
  • Percussionists: Music majors with percussion as a primary instrument and non-majors taking percussion lessons will be issued access to the lock box/key for the Percussion Studio located in Denison Hall. The Percussion Studio can be used by reservation, though walk-ins are permitted when the studio is not in use. ** To request this specialized access, review the "Controlled Rooms + Secure Storage" section on our Buildings + Access page.
