Secondary Lessons: Policies/Pre-Registration Form
Students interested in taking lessons:

All Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) students can take applied music lessons for academic credit through the Joint Music Program with affiliate Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) faculty members. This form should be used to request registration in secondary lessons (MUAP 131 or 531) by a music minor/non-major or a music major on a secondary instrument.

Before the first week of class:
  • Students must consult their advisor and submit this form (agreeing to the terms/conditions of secondary lessons) before starting the registration process.
  • Graduate/Professional students may require a "career restriction" permission from their school/program to complete the registration process.
  • Students should notify music@case.edu if they choose not to continue in applied music lessons.
Requirements for beginners:
  • Must have a basic foundation for reading music or complete MUTH 103 or MUTH 104 prior to taking lessons.
  • Students with little or no prior experience interested in learning guitar/piano/voice are required to take the corresponding Group Music Class for Beginners before enrolling in lessons.
  • Start lessons for 1.00 credit units and then discuss an increase to 2.00 units with the instructor.
Learners of all experience levels can study with expert faculty who teach fundamentals of technique and musical expressions.

After completing the pre-registration form:
  • The CWRU Music Office will consult with the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) to assign an instructor.
  • Once the instructor is assigned, the enrollment permission in SIS is released and the student will receive an email from the Music Office with the course registration information and next steps.
  • The student will be asked to contact the instructor to confirm studio space and arrange a weekly lesson time.
  • The student should make timely effort to contact their instructor to schedule their weekly lesson time and register in SIS before the end of the Drop/Add period.
  • Review our Policies & Operating Procedures and bookmark the Resources for Current Students.
Policies:

  • Lessons can be used toward free elective credit, but do not satisfy breadth requirements (e.g., humanities).
  • Lessons cannot be audited.
  • Students must remain in good academic standing to continue in lessons.
  • Students will continue to study with the same instructor unless otherwise indicated and should contact the Music Office during each registration period to continue in lessons.
  • Students must be able to provide their own instrument(s) or authorized to loan a school-owned instrument. See the Instrument Request Form for more information. Students can request instruments only if they are enrolled in an ensemble that requires that instrument.
