Community Organization Letter of Understanding

Dear Community Organization Supervisor:

On behalf of Bethel University, we would like to thank you for entering into a partnership with us to provide richer educational opportunities for our students. By accepting and supervising our students, you are helping these students connect classroom content with real-life experiences and community knowledge. Ultimately, you are also contributing to education's mission of promoting civic responsibility and working for social justice. In order to become involved with Bethel’s Center for Community Engaged Learning program, we kindly request that you review the information to ensure that placement is appropriate.

Community Engaged Learning is the combination of academic coursework with carefully planned, meaningful service that provides direct benefits to the community. Each student will spend 25 hours throughout the semester working with a community organization.

The goals of Community Engaged Learning are:
1) To enhance classroom learning
2) To provide direct service that benefits the community
3) To promote civic responsibility and social justice
4) Each course has specific learning outcomes (these will be shared with you at the beginning of the semester)

As a community organization supervising Bethel students, you will ensure that these students are provided with:
1) Orientation, training, and supervision for the duration of their time at your organization
2) A description of the skills needed to complete the assigned project
3) A clear description (written or verbal) of the assigned project, including expectations, requirements, and responsibilities

Additional Information

In order to provide a quality experience for both the community organization and students, the Center for Community Engaged Learning commits to do the following:
1) Provide a clear letter of understanding to each professor who is teaching a community engaged learning course. This letter will clearly outline the professor's, student's and community organization's roles.
2) Present a clear letter of understanding to each student who is taking a community engaged learning course.  This letter will clearly outline the professor's, student's, and community organization’s roles.
5) At the end of the first week of classes, the professor will email the community organization's on site supervisor, and within this message include a list of students who will be contacting them about volunteering that semester.
6) In partnership with the Community Partner, we will present students with specific orientation and application information from the community organization with whom they will be working.
7) We will check-in with each site supervisor several times throughout the semester to make sure that everything is going fine.
